Microsoft - a year that was ....

It has been sometime since my last blog, if you don't know i am a die hard fan of Google (not just bcoz most of its products are free) but coz of really fast, innovative products that utilize the power of web and help in transforming our lives.

With that in mind , I jot down what the year 2009 was for Microsoft ; with failure of Vista and Windows search really not doing well it was not the start MS desired , so MS had to invent (not discover) what it lacked these days.

Eureka ! came Bing, the Microsoft search which made lot of news on arrival, MS invested a lot in publicizing the Bing which helped a lot. The Bing was first taste of real success for MS, which was also recognized by Google, which allotted people to study Bing. Also the search deal with Yahoo! added to Bing's growth. The deal made Bing the common platform for both Bing and Yahoo search. With Google being the dominant search player, it was a welcome move for both Yahoo and MS. It also gives more choice to user in a monopolized search world.

Then came Windows 7 in October which is here primarily to wash away the 'sins' of Vista. Also Office 2010 was spoken about mainly because of its web editing that enables collaboration ( like Google Docs). All n all it has been a good year for MS compared to last one.

As a footnote what we can read from it is MS is trying to catch up faster than before. It has always been a late entry Eg. Zune (Ipod), Bing (Google Search), WebOffice (Google Docs), MS Mobile Apps- yet to be out (Apple Apps) ; (do comment if i have missed any). But has a clear advantage in sectors like .Net Framework for mobile( against Android Platform) - 46% people opt for MS .Net (Source : Technology News )

Google search by Voice - For Nokia S60 Phones

Posted at google mobile blog, this new product from google has voice recognition support for nokia phones. It is just like any mobile app that runs on Nokia phones , It facilitates google search with voice capability. So no typing keys anymore. Hope google extends the app to all java supported phones soon. I'm looking forward to run this app on my cell phone :) Check the video to witness the power of voice recognition. Location based query results adds more value. With voice reco becoming one of the stronghold of google (after acquisition of Grand Central) it definitely has an edge over other mobile apps.

X Factor

Tech: XYZ Company this is so-and-so speaking. May I have your username please?

Female Customer: Yes I want to speak to the person in charge immediately!

Tech: Speaking. What can I do for you?

Female Customer: I want to complain about the pornographic bookmarks your company put in my web browser!

Tech: We didn’t put any pornographic bookmarks in your web browser.

Female Customer: Oh yes you did! I’m looking at them right now!

(Tech remembers the Netscape history list and grins to himself)

Tech: Where exactly are these “bookmarks” located?

Female Customer: In Netscape!

Tech: And where exactly in Netscape would that be?

Female: In that little list that comes down when you click the little down arrow!

Tech: The one right above the Net Search button?

Female Customer: Yes that one!

Tech: Miss, that’s the Netscape history list. Netscape keeps the past ten links you typed in that box. The only way to put an address in that box is for someone to physically sit at your computer and type in a web address.

Female Customer: Well I certainly didn’t type in those X rated web addresses!

Tech: Well somebody did. Who else has access to your computer, and uses the Internet?

Female Customer: Just me and my husband!

(Several seconds of silence pass … Hey! I wasn’t going to say it!)

Female Customer: …….. oh …………. OOOH! … Thank you.

(She quickly hung up)

GM Vs Bill Gates

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, “If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.”

In response to Bill’s comments, General Motors issued a press release stating, “If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they painted new lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull ove r to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue.

For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Only one person at a time could use the car unless you bought “CarNT,” but then you would have to buy more seats.

6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive — but it would only run on five percent of the roads.

7. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single “general protect ion fault” warning light.

8. The airbag system would ask, “Are you sure?” before deploying.

9. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the antenna.

10. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally Road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car’s performance to diminish by 50 percent or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.

11. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

12. You’d have to press the “start” button to turn the engine off.

Use Pen drive as RAM (Vista/Windows 7)

Recently i came across an article that said that Pen Drive can be used to speed up windows vista.USB 2.0 and above, SD card, Compact Flash or any other massive portable flash drive can be used to speed up the working of vista using the ReadyBoost feature.

When a removable memory device such as a
USB flash drive is first inserted into a port, vista checks if it is fast enough to work with the Superfetch mechanism that ReadyBoost uses. If so,we are asked if we want the drive to be used for improving system performance. We can then choose to allocate part of a USB drive's memory to speed up performance and use the remainder to store files.

The performance is drastically improved. In some cases a system whose memory is increased from 512MB to 1 GB through the external plugged device can see the speed improving from 11 sec to 2 sec. The performance is even better in the case of laptop systems as laptops have a relatively low 'rpm's than the desktop systems. It also saves the battery power of the laptops.
